If the US tries to make bitcoin illegal it'll go up in value. Its privacy is partially based on the simple Swiss model as well as the block chain thing. With quantum computing I don't think they can outlaw it. That's why its currently legal.

Also, our current political system would make legislation impossible due to large corporate interests.

Lastly, The US isn't China's greatest threat, China, is China's greatest threat. Between internal terrorism and unsustainable economic policy, they are ripe for something far uglier than Jan 6th. Their rising middle class isn't going back, which means they need slave labor.
